Alabama Man Charged In Sports Betting Case

A man who is accused of leading a sports high roller gambling operation based in Milton, Alabama has pleaded guilty to federal charges.

Philip Mazzella Jr., 59, was the leader of the high roller gambling operation, which took in millions of dollars in wagers each month. Mazzella was arrested and charged last week, along with five other people, in what the state police called "Operation Player's Paradise."

As part of his plea bargain, Mazzella agreed to share his knowledge about three other pending high roller gambling cases with federal prosecutors. Mazzella faces a maximum of five years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

The Operation Player's Paradise also shed light on the activities of Vermillion Parish Police Juror Ernal J. Broussard, who was convicted of "aiding and abetting" Mazzella's high roller gambling operation. Broussard's role in the business was to cash checks for the operation, routing funds through his Abbeville store, Package Liquor Operation.

The high roller gambling operation saw millions of bets per month, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley. Investigators believe that the operation received about $10 million in wagers some months. "And that's a conservative estimate," said Finley.
